GRANTS (Awarded in December)

Dr. Mary K. Dredger (Assistant Professor, Early, Elementary and Reading Education) received $5,000 from the Charles Koch Foundation to establish a digital collaboration between Fredericksburg Academy and James Madison University.

Dr. Jason T. Haraldsen (Assistant Professor, Physics and Astronomy) received $39,137 from Los Alamos National Laboratory to investigate the changes in properties of various Dirac materials with substitution of magnetic and charge-doped ions.

Dr. S. Keith Holland (Assistant Professor, Engineering), Dr. Kyle G. Gipson (Assistant Professor, Engineering), Dr. Justin J. Henriques (Assistant Professor, Engineering) and Dr. Robert L. Nagel (Assistant Professor, Engineering) received $1,800 from VentureWell to train students to be drivers of change through the implementation of a new Innovation Leadership minor.

Gary S. Race (Grant Administrator, Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services) received $15,000 from Rockingham Memorial Hospital to provide onsite urgent care services, chronic illness management and preventative care to homeless clients enrolled at local shelters.

HONORS

Dr. Brenda M. Ryals (Professor, Communication Sciences and Disorders) was awarded the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s highest honor, the Honors of the Association, for her outstanding contributions in the field of audiology.

Center for International Stabilization and Recovery was recognized by Secretary of State John Kerry for its work on behalf of the U.S. Department of State in producing the annual publication, To Walk the Earth in Safety. The publication documents the U.S. Conventional Weapons Destruction Program, which is managed by the Department of State's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement (PM/WRA). JMU has collaborated with the Department of State since 2009 on the publication.

Center for International Stabilization and Recovery was recognized in the Congressional Record with a statement of support by the Honorable Robert J. Wittman, U.S. Representative for Virginia's first congressional district. CISR is a global authority in the fields of conventional weapons destruction and post-conflict recovery. Since 1997, CISR has produced The Journal of ERW and Mine Action, the longest running publication of its type. CISR also produces To Walk the Earth in Safety, the U.S. Government’s annual report on conventional weapons destruction programs.


PRESENTATIONS

Dr. David A. Stringham (Assistant Professor, Music) presented “Both/And: Teaching Generative Creativity and Music Performance in Ensembles” at the New York State School Music Association winter conference in Rochester on Dec. 5, 2014.

SERVICE

Dr. Nancy E. Barbour (Head and Professor, Early, Elementary and Reading Education) was selected serve for three years on the Commission on Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation for the National Association for the Education of Young Children beginning January 2015. The position is charged with making program accreditation decisions based on evidence that a program has met each accreditation standard.
