Scholarship Overview

An endowed scholarship established by Donna Burcham Fowlkes '72 and J. Thomas Fowlkes in memory of Ola Belle Garber Cline '16 and in honor of her daughter, Phyllis Cline Burcham. This scholarship is intended to benefit a JMU student from Southwest Virginia (the counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Smyth, Washington, Bland, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Carroll, Pulaski, Wythe, Dickenson, Russell, Tazewell, and Buchanan and the cities of Bristol, Galax, and Norton, VA). The students must exhibit financial need and preference goes to the son or daughter of someone in the education industry (teacher, administrator, counselor, public, private, elementary, secondary, or higher education). The recipient must file a Free Financial Aid Form by March 1 of the enrolling year. The recipient will be selected as an entering freshman and will continue to receive the scholarship as long as he/she remains an active, full-time student at JMU and continues to meet the scholarship requirements. If at any time the student recipient fails to meet the requirements or when the student graduates, a new entering freshman student will be selected based on the established criteria. After the scholarship is fully funded, we would like the earnings to provide four scholarships each year, one for a member of each class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior). The Director of Scholarships will select the scholarship recipient.
