Scholarship Overview

An annual scholarship established by Dr. Elizabeth Swallow, who is a physician in Harrisonburg, Virginia. She has been in practice in the region, as a member of the Medical Staff at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, since 1987. Dr. Swallow also is a pianist, studying with Dr. Eric Ruple, a distinguished member of the faculty for the School of Music at James Madison University. The Elizabeth Swallow Scholarship for Double Reed Music Majors is for students at James Madison University majoring in the oboe and bassoon, thereby enhancing the School of Music's capacity to attract the best students in the country in these uncommon specialties. The Donor's intention is to provide scholarship support for undergraduate students whose chosen field of study and performance is the oboe or bassoon, which are major disciplines within the School of Music at James Madison University.

In each academic year, there will be one (or more) outstanding undergraduate student scholar(s) designated as the Swallow Music Scholar(s). Once the scholarship is awarded to a student, so long as the student remains a double reed music major in good standing with the School of Music, this scholarship may be renewed for up to three more academic years.
