The minor is a part of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a program within the College of Science and Mathematics.
The minor provides a solid foundation of critical thinking and mathematical concepts while also allowing for a bit of advanced abstract thinking. This collection of skills often appeals to employers and graduate schools. Students majoring in Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Finance, and Physics may be particularly interested in a minor in Mathematics because of requirements of those programs.
The mathematics minor is open to students not majoring in mathematics or statistics. Each student must obtain prior approval of all courses to be counted in the minor from the mathematics advisor.
The requirement for a minor in mathematics is 18-20 credit hours. At least six credit hours must be earned within the JMU Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
