Dr. Roger Collins is part of the educational leadership team within the LTLE department. He has previously taught each of the individual graduate program courses leading to the education leadership certificate and most recently has focused on teaching and further development of the Internship course. He has experience teaching in graduate programs in The University of Virginia master’s degree program and in the Shenandoah University masters and doctoral degree programs. Additionally, he was executive director of the Virginia School-University Partnership (VSUP) a non-profit organization of over 60 Virginia public school divisions.
Dr. Collins previously held positions as a public-school teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and finished his Pk-12 career as a division superintendent, spanning four central Virginia counties. During the 2023-24 school year he served as the Interim Division Superintendent of Radford City Public Schools in Radford, Va.
In addition to teaching in the LTLE department, Dr. Collins consults with school divisions and other entities in the areas of school improvement, strategic planning, teaming, leadership performance coaching and development. He often works with school boards across the state as divisions seek and hire new division superintendents. Working as a mentor and coach for school superintendents and other education leaders is an important part of his servant leader philosophy.
Executive leadership development inspires his core belief in organization effectiveness and success. Furthermore, his belief that PK-16 education is the cornerstone of democracy drives his passion and commitment. Preparing high quality leaders and helping graduate students succeed are his professional priorities.
Global education has always been an area of keen interest for Dr. Collins. As a former outreach coordinator for the Asia Institute at The University of Virginia, he worked with grant funded programs as they intersected with public schools. In addition to working at the Asia Institute he has traveled and studied education systems in India, China, South Korea and Finland forming multiple international partnerships along the way.
Roger continues to have research interest in servanthood leadership, individual and group leadership development, cognitive development, organizational work culture, employee motivation, educator turnover and retention, leadership performance coaching, and strategic planning related to organizational behavior. Outside of work he enjoys family, exercise, and travel.
