First-Generation Student Success programs work to advocate for and provide resources to the 2000+ first-generation students attending JMU. We offer networking opportunities, academic workshops, study abroad programs and a space for first-gen students to study, rest, and collaborate.
First-Gen program resources are located on the second floor of the Student Success Center in the Reddix Center. If you are a student looking for resources, support or have questions about anything JMU related send the center an email at firstgencenter@jmu.edu.
Who is a First-Generation Student?
JMU defines “first-generation” as a student whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not graduate from a four-year institution. However, the Reddix Center welcomes any student with limited prior exposure to or knowledge of the college experience. Currently, about 17% of the JMU undergraduate population is considered first-generation.

First-Gen Champions
The First-Gen Champions list connects first-generation students with faculty and staff who are passionate about offering mentorship, guidance, and support. These individuals, who are themselves first-gen, are dedicated to helping students navigate their academic journey, offering valuable insights from a variety of experiences, both at JMU and beyond.
