Arthur Dean serves as the Associate Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at James Madison University. He is a member of the James Madison University’s Cabinet leadership team . This is his twenty-ninth year at JMU. He currently has oversight of the Office of Equal Opportunity and various DEI initiatives for the university. He has held a variety of positions at James Madison University in multiple departments and divisions.

He serves/served on a variety of boards and leadership positions within the local community. Here is a brief list of some of the boards/organizations: Boys and Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, Sentara RMH Board, and the Horizon Learning Foundation. He also served for four years on the National Association of Diversity Officer’s in Higher Education board as a Council Representative.

He has presented at numerous conferences, participated in a variety of institutional strategic planning centered around leadership, diversity and inclusion efforts.

He is from a proud military family and was raised in Fairfax County Virginia. He is married to Mrs. Denedriane (Harris) Dean of Hampton, Va. and together they have three lovely children (young adults), Arthur “Tre”, Dominique and Adia. If not at work he can be found engaged in a variety of community activities, traveling, reading, playing sports, building his Faith and spending time with his family.
