Opening Session: Importance of Civility and Freedom of Expression

Thursday, September 26th, 2024 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. via Zoom

We are excited to announce the launch JMU's Freedom of Expression series with the first installment, “The Importance of Civility and Freedom of Expression”, which aims to delve deep into the vital interplay between respectful discourse and the right to free speech. This event will set the stage for a thought-provoking journey, exploring how these concepts shape our interactions, communities, and society at large.

This series is built in support of Governor Youngkin’s desire to Value and Secure a Culture that embraces Free Inquiry, Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression as was expressed to University Presidents in the fall of 2022.

As the first in a series of events, this kickoff session will introduce the importance of Civility and Freedom of Expression. Throughout the 2024-2025 academic year four additional themes will be explored. Participants will engage with leading experts, explore real-world scenarios, and participate in interactive discussions designed to foster a deeper understanding of how civility and freedom of expression can coexist and reinforce one another.

Join us as we embark on this important conversation, laying the groundwork for a series that will challenge, inspire, and equip you with the tools to navigate the complexities of modern discourse. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, a curious student, or an active community member, this series will provide invaluable insights and practical strategies for promoting respectful and open dialogue in all areas of life.
