Students whose native/heritage language is taught at JMU may have their B.A. language requirement waived if they complete one of the following steps:
- Place into the 300-level on the JMU Foreign Language Placement Exam and confirm that score in the Language Resource Center (Keezell 103). The student must contact the Director of the Language Resource Center, Stephany Plecker pleckesg@jmu.edu, to arrange the confirmation exam.
- Arrange a proficiency exam with a JMU faculty member who teaches that language.
- Achieve a qualifying score on the SAT Subject Test.
Students whose native/heritage language is not taught at JMU may have their B.A. language requirement waived if they complete one of the following steps:
- Achieve a qualifying score on the SAT Subject Test
- Provide an official transcript from a high school or equivalent institution in which the language of instruction is not English. The student must have graduated from that institution.
- Provide a certification of high-intermediate language proficiency from another accredited institution, along with a description of the certification process.
- Provide the official results of an American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) certified exam in a sealed envelope to the Director of the Language Resource Center, Stephany Plecker pleckesg@jmu.edu. The score must be I-3 or above.
