Jalal also played a role on the international political stage during summer 2021! He assisted the King of Jordan’s media team with arranging interviews with political analysts in Washington D.C. during King Abdullah’s visit with President Biden in July of this year. The interviews Jalal helped arrange discussed cooperation between Jordan and the U.S. on approaching current issues in the Middle East.
Elizabeth Narehood
Doctoral Candidate Elizabeth Narehood's policy brief “Virginia’s G3 Initiative: A Workforce Development Statewide Promise” was published on the College Promise Campaign news site in November 2021. Elizabeth’s brief examines Governor Northam’s campaign for free community college as part of the G3 initiative, short for “Get a Skill, Get a Job, Get Ahead.” In addition to tuition-free community college, G3 seeks to place critical supports for low- and middle-income students while targeting education programs for high-demand careers to drive the state’s economic, social, and civic prosperity overall, and aid in Virginia’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dan Finseth chaired the ARNOVA Paper Sessions “Organizational Leadership and Management” and “Colonialism, human rights, and the plantation narrative: Historical antecedents.”
Dr. Margaret Sloan and SSLS student Kennedy Musyoka chaired the virtual colloquium MythBusters: The Finance Edition presented by Dr. Elizabeth Searing of The University of Texas Dallas.
Jalal Maqableh (Doctoral Candidate) holds appointments in several local nonprofit organizations. He currently serves as Treasurer for the Fairfield Center and holds a seat on Harrisonburg’s International Festival Committee. Jalal is also participating in this year’s session of The Harrisonburg Citizen Academy, a 13-week program that runs from August through November is designed to teach residents about the city and the services it provides.
Tiffany Brutus (Doctoral Candidate) is serving on the Board of Directors for the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC). PEATC builds positive futures for Virginia’s children by working collaboratively with families, schools and communities in order to improve opportunities for excellence in education and success in school and community life with a special focus on children with disabilities.
Promotions and Career Advancement
Carson Lonett (Fall 2021 Cohort) was appointed as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs at JMU in July 2021. See news release and announcement available.
Awards and Recognitions
Maureen Malomba was selected as one of 24 participants for ARNOVA's Graduate Diversity Scholars and Leaders Professional Development Workshop held during the 50th annual conference November 18-20, 2021. The program focused on helping emerging scholars from underrepresented groups prepare to enter the field of nonprofit, philanthropic, and voluntary action studies. The award provided a $1,000 scholarship and support to offset travel expenses to attend the workshops and conference.
Maureen was also 1 of 7 faculty accepted to the Fall 2021 JMU African, African American, and Diaspora Studies Center Critical Perspectives and Pedagogies Institute. Every semester AAAD selects up to 12 qualified faculty members to attend this highly iterative 8-session classes. The AAAD Critical Perspectives and Pedagogies Institute is a new annual 8-week institute that offers JMU faculty participants the chance to dive deeply into the histories, philosophies, methodologies, and pedagogies of African, African American and Diaspora Studies. The acceptance awarded Maureen a $250 stipend.
Kennedy Musyoka was awarded an ARNOVA Conference Scholarship & Travel Grant Award to attend the 50th Annual Conference November 18-20, 2021 in Atlanta, Georgia. The scholarship and grant covered provided $340 in funds to offset travel fees.
Kennedy was also awarded a $500 travel grant from the office of Research & Scholarship to attend ARNOVA.
Emily Irungu was also awarded an ARNOVA Conference Scholarship which covered registration fees ($190) to attend the conference.
