Education professor, health professor honored for outstanding work

JMU will recognize honorees from each of the university’s eight colleges at home football games throughout the season for their work that benefits the university and JMU Athletics.

Professors Monica Smith-Woofter and Jamie Frye were recognized as “Game Changers” Saturday during the Family Weekend football game for their outstanding work benefiting the university and the JMU Athletics Department.  

Smith-Woofter, a professor in the College of Education, and Frye, a professor in the College of Health and Behavioral Studies, were joined in an on-field ceremony during the third quarter by Brian Zugelder, associate dean of the College of Education, Sharon Lovell, dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies, Bob Kolvoord, provost, and Matt Roan, athletic director. 

The nomination of Smith-Woofter stated she, “is the epitome of a ‘gamechanger.’ Since her arrival at JMU five years ago, her level of professionalism, leadership and collaboration have been key factors in the development of a culture of significance within the College of Education. Her colleagues view her as a leader. In addition, Smith-Woofter has been instrumental in developing leaders at the local, state, national and international levels.”  

Frye serves as a program director and faculty member in the Athletic Training master’s program. Her nomination stated that, “In addition to demonstrating a consistently deep commitment to students, she has long partnered with Sports Medicine to provide patient care herself as well as to arrange clinical placements for our students within JMU Athletics. Thanks to Dr. Frye’s leadership, the JMU Athletic Training education program has become a national model for teaching and assessment.” 

JMU Athletics plans to recognize Game Changer honorees from each of the university’s eight colleges at home football games throughout the season. Doreen Liccione (’92), an academic adviser in the College of Business, became the first JMU employee recognized as a “Game Changer” during the Sept. 7 football game.   

Game Changers will also be recognized at games on the following dates: 

  • Oct. 10: College of Arts and Letters 
  • Oct. 26: College of Visual and Performing Arts  
  • Nov. 9: College of Integrated Sciences and Engineering, and College of Science and Mathematics  
  • Nov. 30: Honors College
