Windows 11 Upgrade Schedule
Information Technology-ComputingWindows 11 has officially arrived at JMU! Beginning March 4th, Information Technology (IT) will make the Windows 11 upgrade available to all compatible JMU-managed endpoints via Software Center. To run the upgrade installer, look in the Operating Systems section as follows:
It is important to note that IT does not recommend performing this upgrade remotely. It is preferred that you perform the upgrade on the JMU network if possible. Most of the installation process takes place in the background so that you may continue using your computer. A progress window appears when the upgrade installation begins, but you can move (click and drag) this window out of your way if needed.
As the installation progresses, you will be prompted to restart the computer, and from that point there is a 15-to-30-minute time period where you will be unable to use it.
Where Can I Find More Information or Get Help?
If you have questions or need assistance, refer to the upgrade instructions or contact the IT Help Desk at (540)568-3555 or helpdesk@jmu.edu.

Will My Computer Run Windows 11?
As we’ve announced previously, computers that were purchased in 2019 or later (ESN sticker begins with “19” or higher) can run Windows 11, but most older computers cannot. A full list of compatible models is available from Dell (for best results, look for 24H2 compatibility). You should plan to immediately replace any 2018 or older computers.
What if I Have Equipment or Software that Must Run Windows 10?
If you have a special situation due to a 3rd party requirement, IT can discuss it with you to determine whether exceptions are appropriate and/or what steps must be taken to allow a device to continue running Windows 10 after support ends. Please contact the IT Help Desk with these requests.
What if I Miss the Deadline Due to an Incompatible Computer?
After Windows 10 support ends in October, Information Technology will take steps to disable or otherwise prevent JMU-owned Windows 10 computers from accessing the JMU network and/or other resources. You must plan to replace incompatible devices as soon as possible. IT recommends that all JMU computers are replaced on at least a six-year cycle. That means in 2025, you should have replaced all your 2018 and older computers and should be planning to replace your 2019 models. This practice will ensure your device has adequate performance and compatibility with JMU systems, and it will minimize security risks to JMU.
