Overview

Students can view recommendations at the Madison CyberZone in the JMU Bookstore.

JMU has concentrated its purchasing and support efforts around Dell and Apple products, including discounts and on-campus hardware warranty repair.  Departments should make every effort to meet their computer needs with Dell and Apple branded products. If you need assistance configuring a Dell or Apple product to meet your departmental needs, contact Becky Helmick at (540) 568-8083.

Note to Teleworkers and Online/Distance Learners: To allow for videoconferencing, please purchase all computers with wireless networking capability, a video camera (webcam), a microphone, and speakers.  Teleworkers, please view additional recommendations at the bottom of this page.

Computer Recommendations for JMU Employees who Telework
For employees who telework, especially in a hybrid mode, JMU Information Technology recommends a laptop computer matching the minimum specifications above or better, and please ensure that the device also has the following:

  • Wireless networking (Wi-Fi) capability
  • Video camera or webcam
  • Microphone and speakers (internal or external, such as a headset)

Most new laptops sold today have the above features, which should be considered the basics for telework.  When planning for a more comfortable telework experience, here are additional items to consider:

  • Extra keyboard and/or mouse - more comfortable than a laptop keyboard and trackpad when working for long periods
  • Separate monitor - a 24 inch monitor (or larger) will provide extra workspace and easier viewing
  • Docking station (Dock): charges your laptop and connects it to all of your peripherals and monitors with fewer cables; some "hub" monitors double as docking stations

Choosing compatible devices can be challenging, so please contact Information Technology for configuration assitance, should you have questions.

Additionally, teleworkers should view information on the VPN and RunSafe.

Computer Recommendations for Incoming Students
JMU Information Technology works with the Madison CyberZone at the JMU Bookstore to configure Apple and Dell computers that meet the needs of the JMU Academic Departments. Recommendations by Major are available on the Madison CyberZone site.

Computer Replacement Statement for JMU Departments
JMU Information Technology expects departments to replace computer equipment on a minimum of a 6-year replacement cycle. For example, in 2025, departments should replace all computers with an Equipment Service Number (ESN) beginning with a “18” or lower (models older than 2019). This practice helps ensure that the computer has adequate performance and maintains compatibility with supported versions of operating systems and application software. Computers that can no longer run modern, supported operating systems and applications pose a security risk to JMU’s computing environment and data. As devices age, they increasingly become no longer cost-effective to repair, repairs are more difficult/take longer (especially when out-of-warranty), and employee productivity is sacrificed. JMU computer equipment that does not meet the minimum specifications above may be disabled or otherwise prevented from accessing JMU resources.
