Overview
Students can view recommendations at the Madison CyberZone in the JMU Bookstore.
JMU has concentrated its purchasing and support efforts around Dell and Apple products, including discounts and on-campus hardware warranty repair. Departments should make every effort to meet their computer needs with Dell and Apple branded products. If you need assistance configuring a Dell or Apple product to meet your departmental needs, contact Becky Helmick at (540) 568-8083.
Note to Teleworkers and Online/Distance Learners: To allow for videoconferencing, please purchase all computers with wireless networking capability, a video camera (webcam), a microphone, and speakers. Teleworkers, please view additional recommendations at the bottom of this page.

Computer Recommendations for JMU Employees who Telework
For employees who telework, especially in a hybrid mode, JMU Information Technology recommends a laptop computer matching the minimum specifications above or better, and please ensure that the device also has the following:
- Wireless networking (Wi-Fi) capability
- A video-capable camera or webcam
- A microphone and speakers, or a headset with a microphone
Most new laptops sold today have the above features, which should be considered the basics for telework. However, when planning for a more comfortable telework experience, here are additional items to consider in both your home and JMU office locations:
- An extra keyboard and/or mouse - this will be more comfortable than a laptop keyboard and trackpad when working for long periods of time
- A separate monitor - a 24 inch monitor (or larger) will provide extra workspace for easier viewing of larger content
- A "dock" or docking station - this will charge your laptop and allow you to connect it to all of your peripherals and monitors with fewer cables; some "hub" monitors double as docking stations
Choosing compatible devices can be challenging, so please contact Information Technology for configuration assitance, should you have questions.
Additionally, teleworkers should view information on the SSL VPN and RunSafe.
Computer Recommendations for Incoming Students
JMU Information Technology works with the Madison CyberZone at the JMU Bookstore to configure Apple and Dell computers that meet the needs of the JMU Academic Departments. Recommendations by Major are available on the Madison CyberZone site.
Computer Replacement Statement for JMU Departments
JMU Information Technology recommends that departments budget to replace computers with an Equipment Service Number (ESN) beginning with a “17” or lower (models older than 2018). This is to ensure the computer has adequate performance and compatibility with supported versions of operating systems and application software. Computers that can no longer run modern, supported operating systems and applications pose a security risk to JMU’s computing environment and data. Also, when a computer's warranty has expired, the device can quickly become no longer cost-effective to repair in the event of a hardware failure, and repairs can take longer, sacrificing employee productivity. Requesting funding to replace computers does not guarantee that funding will be provided.
