Overview
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is an information security best practice that adds an extra measure of protection beyond your user name and password. The technology uses something you physically possess (phone, tablet, or Yubikey) to verify your identity at login. This step prevents bad actors from accessing your account even when they may have guessed or stolen your password. JMU has implemented Okta as our MFA provider.
Okta is new to JMU, and you can visit the project website for more information.
Who can use this Service?
How can I get this Service?
Everyone who uses JMU systems must activate their eID account in Okta. Applicants are not required to enroll an MFA security method (like a phone with Okta Verify or a Yubikey) until they become students. For information about the enrollment process, see eID (Electronic Identification) or search the IT Knowledge Base for answers via the IT Service Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
First, do one of the following:
- If the device is a phone/tablet, download/install Okta Verify on the device.
- If the device is a Yubikey, obtain the device before you proceed.
If you no longer have access to your old phone, and it was the only enrolled device in your account, contact the IT Help Desk to assist with resetting your account. You will be required to verify your identity with a photo ID before your account is reset.
We encourage everyone to enroll a personal device (phone or tablet) running the Okta Verify app, because it is by far the most convenient way to perform/complete MFA. Employees who do not have a compatible device will be provided a Yubikey device. Students who require a Yubikey are expected to purchase it from the JMU Bookstore.
Your Okta Verify app can provide one-time passcodes to use to complete MFA. It is also recommended to obtain a Yubikey as a backup.
There is no limit to the number of devices you can add. JMU IT recommends that you enroll at least two devices so that you have a backup in case one of them is unavailable.
You can use a secondary device to visit mylogin.jmu.edu, remove the old phone, and add a new phone. If you have no secondary device, you must contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.
It depends on your plan and your provider. The Okta Verify app uses very little data, and it uses no cellular data when your phone is connected to WiFi. Individuals are responsible for any data charges. JMU is not responsible for the reimbursement of any expense incurred through use of Okta.
You can still use a smartphone on wireless networks, so if you have a compatible phone, we still recommend installing Okta Verify and enrolling it.
