Alcohol (Responsible); Hazing (Responsible)

Incident(s) Description:
The organization was found responsible for the following behaviors that occurred on 10-5-2024: blindfolded or requested members to blindfold themselves before transporting them in a motor vehicle to an off-campus location for a surprise party; provided alcohol to underage members at this surprise party.

Outcome(s):
Organizational Probation (through the end of the Fall 2025 semester): Outcomes may include suspension or expulsion from JMU and/or removal from all university housing if found responsible, in a future case, for another violation of Alcohol or Hazing policy.

Organizational & Leadership Development (through the end of the Fall 2025 semester): Once-a-month organizational development meetings between the President and the Coordinator of Interfraternity Council. During these meetings, the President will receive additional support on stewarding culture change, hosting safe bonding/social activities, organizational risk management and bystander intervention strategies, and maintenance of new member activities free of alcohol and hazing.

Reminder of assigned outcome by Acacia Fraternity headquarters: Highwire refresher course to the Tightrope anti-hazing training that all members have completed (deadline of March 15, 2025, for 100% of the chapter membership).

Reminder of assigned outcome by Acacia Fraternity headquarters: Re-commitment retreat to review past chapter actions and behaviors, identify barriers, and collaborate on the vision for the future (deadline of April 15, 2025, for 100% of the chapter officers and 80% of the remaining chapter membership).

Reminder of assigned outcome by Acacia Fraternity headquarters: The chapter is required to utilize the Pathway pledge program, and the pledge educator will have weekly calls with the Chapter Coach or headquarters staff to touch base on activities (headquarters staff will determine when weekly calls may end). Initial call with headquarters staff should occur at least two weeks before starting the program. The chapter is expected to utilize the program in Spring 2025 and continue using the program in all future semesters.
