Bryan Brentus Carter Green earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in American political development and black and racial politics.  He also earned a B.A. in Political Science and African American Studies from Temple University and an M.A. in Politics from The New School for Social Research.  His teaching interests include Black politics, Black political thought, race and capitalism, racial politics, urban politics, and the politics of crime, policing, and punishment.

Dr. Green’s research examines the political development of criminal legal institutions and their continued impact on public policy and public safety outcomes.  Specifically, he studies how mid-to-late 20th-century shifts in urban economies and demographics and the expansion of political rights of various marginalized citizens prompted state governments to create new criminal legal institutions and expand protective rights for criminal legal system actors.  His works-in-progress examine the political development of police unions and police labor law.
