Fall 2024

Internship
U.S. Representative Shelia Cherfilus-McCormick

Where are you from?  Why did you choose JMU?
I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, located about thirty minutes outside of Washington D.C. I knew I always wanted to go to JMU when my elementary school took us on a field trip and I forever wanted to attend college since then.  My eight-year-old self knew JMU would be home to me soon. I chose JMU because of the homey environment and community and the great educational opportunities that JMU provides.

Why did you decide to participate in Washington Semester?
I participated in the Washington Semester to gain real-life work experience and be in the political realm of Washington D.C. I did the program my senior year and this program helped me build my resume and secure a long-term internship right after graduation.

What were the highlights of your internship?
I was a Legislative Intern on Capitol Hill and I got to meet many members that have influenced my political life. Another highlight would be meeting my cohort. I loved my cohort and I am forever thankful for the Washington Semester for bringing us together. My last highlight was meeting Bill Nye the Science Guy! My childhood dream came true that day!

What advice would you offer to future Washington Semester students?
Make the most out of what you can. I can say four months is not enough time because you will fall in love with this program. Although, the Washington Semester consists of work and school, when you make the most of the program that's all that truly matters. Go out and explore what D.C. has to offer. Also, maintaining a great work-life balance will help you significantly in this program.

What are your long-term career plans?
I plan on attending Law School come August 2026. After obtaining my JD, I want to stay and work in D.C. for a law firm.
