Industrial Hemp Interests

I am a 35-year veteran of the department as an Analytical Chemistry Professor.  In the past year in my lab, my research students and I have developed both gas and liquid chromatographic analyses of the cannabinoids found in Industrial Hemp.  We have aided many farmers who grew hemp in 2019 by testing their plants for THC compliance and CBD content, all done at no cost.  Although we are not an ISO approved lab, the results of this testing have been used to gain information on plant varieties, growing conditions, etc. to aid farmers in the future.  In 2020, we are aiding commercial hemp extractors with method development and expect to continue to provide a service to growers as well.  This research is being done to help JMU students learn real-world applications of the instrumentation and methods as part of their educational training.
