Graphic Design

Noteworthy campus achievement
Most of my college exploits should remain a secret...

What are you up to now?
I run the branding and graphics studio at FOX Architects in Washington, DC. FOX focuses mainly on corporate interiors and I work with clients to integrate the architecture, brand and messaging into their spaces.

How does your art major/minor inform your career?
I was a graphic design major and spent the beginning part of my career dealing mostly with print. I have slowly gotten into environmental design during my time at FOX. It's been an easy integration. I think the design skills I learned in school and honed on different jobs help everyday. You also never really stop learning. It's an ongoing process.

What are some of the most valuable skills you gained from the School of Art, Design and Art History?
It's always important to know a lot about your craft. I enjoyed the rounded approach and the chance to study other mediums (printmaking, photography). However, probably the most valuable skill is learning to take criticism and having other student critique my work. It's sometimes difficult to decipher what a client wants/needs and learning to synthesize that information into design is a great and useful skill.

What is your advice for JMU students knowing what you know now?
Don't worry about getting your dream job. You don't know what that is yet. Focus on getting the jobs that will help you learn the skills to get that 'dream job'. Be a sponge, listen to everyone and learn.
