AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Roger Tomhave’s research, writing and national and state level presentations are concentrated in the areas of multicultural arts education, advocacy for arts education in the 21st century and authentic assessment strategies as pedagogy for improving student achievement in the arts. 

He is a previous recipient of the National Supervision/Administration Art Educator of the Year, the Virginia State Art Educator of the Year and the Southeastern Region Supervision/Administration Art Educator of the Year for the National Art Education Association. He has been the keynote speaker for the West Virginia, Wisconsin and Virginia state conferences of the National Art Education Association.   

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Tomhave previously worked for 12 years as the fine arts coordinator and eight years as the art specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools, supervising the K-12 fine arts programs delivered by more than 1,000 certified dance, music, theatre arts and visual arts teachers for 140 elementary schools, 25 middle schools and 26 high schools. 

During his tenure in Fairfax County Public Schools, Fairfax arts curricula were recognized for excellence by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

He has taught art for 11 years at the middle school and high school levels on the White Earth Indian Reservation of northern Minnesota.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE

Tomhave is the director of art education student teaching and oversees the professional portfolios of prospective teacher candidates. He is a faculty advisor for the Madison Student Chapter of the National Art Education Association.

Tomhave coordinates practicum experiences of secondary art education students in non-arts classrooms. He also serves as a teaching artist for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and serves as the higher education representative to the Board of the Virginia Art Education Association.

SCHOLARSHIP

Tomhave has been a consulting editor for Schools Arts Magazine, published by Davis Publications, as well as writer and editor for many documents published by the National Art Education Association, including the Opportunity-To-Learn Standards for Visual Arts and the Art Education: Education Reform Handbook: Suggested Policy Perspectives for Professional Development.

He has had articles published in Studies in Art Education; has been on the writing team for two documents published by the National Study of School Evaluation: Indicators of Schools of Quality, Vol. 1: Schoolwide Indicators of Quality and Program Evaluation: Visual and Performing Arts; as well as numerous state and regional publications through the Virginia Art Education Association and Fairfax County Public Schools.

His doctoral dissertation is in the area of assessment in the visual arts: Portfolio Assessment in the Visual Arts: A Comparison of Advanced Secondary Art Education Strategies

Tomhave’s master’s thesis is on the topic of multicultural art education: Value Bases Underlying Conceptions of Multicultural Education: An Analysis of Selected Literature in Art Education and of Interviews
