Andrew Dahlgren explores the social and economic impacts of design, making, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship. Many years of engaging with small business owners, and their supporters, informs his understanding of what makes an industry and a community grow and thrive. Prior to teaching at JMU, Andrew taught in graduate and undergraduate programs in industrial design, product design, and architecture in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. His teaching focuses on design process, sustainable practices, entrepreneurship, and understanding impact.

Outside of the academic setting Andrew has developed a body of work that includes: a design-make practice that utilizes iterative material study processes using wood, textiles, and ceramics; product and business consulting helping entrepreneurs refine product ideas; and ecosystem building practices that bring together stakeholders to collaboratively develop local solutions.
