SADAH Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen

Prospective freshmen wishing to be considered for SADAH merit scholarships must attend a scheduled Portfolio Feedback Day and submit additional materials through Slideroom. There are no additional forms or separate applications to complete to be considered for these merit scholarships.

Students intending to major in Art History, Art B.A., or Art B.S. should contact Records & Recruitment Specialist Michael Penney.

Where do scholarship funds come from?

The Centennial Scholars Program provides financial assistance and a multi-level academic support network, to retain eligible under-represented students.

Lisanby Art History Scholars in Museum Studies

Award: $2,000 for the freshman year.

Eligible recipients for the Lisanby Art History Scholars in Museum Studies are incoming freshmen who declare a major in Art History and have an interest in museum studies. Successful recipients must complete a 1-credit internship with Dr. Wren Stevens at the Madison Art Collection, exploring areas of museum studies during the first semester of their freshman year.

Interested students must attend a Lisanby Scholarship interview at a scheduled On-campus Portfolio Feedback Day and e-mail Dr. Wren Stevens with the following information:

  • Curriculum vitae 
  • Writing sample (no length requirement)
  • An essay that addresses why you wish to study Art History and Musem Studies at JMU (no length requirement)

Prospective art History majors are not required to submit a portfolio or additional materials for review but should follow the regular JMU admissions process.

Excellence in the Arts Awards

Award: 50% of tuition and fees (except orientation, tuition differential and course fees) at the in-state rate. Non-Virginia residents will pay the difference between out-of-state tuition and fee costs and their scholarship.

Recipients of the Madison Award for Academic Excellence possess superior academic records, unusual intellectual curiosity, and an exceptional love for learning.  Scholarship amounts are tied to the cost of in-state tuition and fees the year you enter the university and continue at the same amount for a maximum of four consecutive years.

Freshmen Portfolio Scholarships

Award: $2,000 per academic year, for four years (total $8,000)

Recipients of the Freshman Portfolio Scholarship possess superior academic records, unusual intellectual curiosity and an exceptional love for learning. . Recipients must have declared Architectural Design, Art History, Art or Graphic Design as their major. Students must maintain the major and good academic standing to qualify for renewal.

Arthur and Shonda Moats Scholarship

The Arthur and Shonda Moats Scholarship goes an incoming freshman majoring in Art who demonstrates financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. This scholarship may be awarded for all four academic years, provided the student meets the criteria. If there is not an Art student who meets these criteria, the scholarship will go to a freshman majoring in Education or Political Science.

Marlene and Peter Coe Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship

The Marlene and Peter Coe Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship benefits a full-time JMU student who has demonstrated a capacity to make a contribution to the visual and/or performing arts community at JMU.

Priority goes to students from single-parent households in Patrick County, Va. Otherwise, qualified students from households with other parental composition and from other geographical areas will be considered. A student may be selected as a freshman and continue to receive the scholarship until graduation. Recommendations may be made from the JMU visual and performing arts departments and the Coe family. Administration of the scholarship and final selections will be done by the JMU Scholarship Office.

Two-year Housing Award

The College of Visual and Performing Arts provides free housing for the first two years of undergraduate study to one recipient.
