Housing

Feeling safe and supported is important for all students within the JMU community. The Office of Residence Life (ORL) is currently offering a gender neutral housing program in Jennings Hall and in the Apartments on Grace. Students seeking housing accommodations are encouraged to contact Emily Higham at 540-568-6275 or the Office of Residence Life at 540-568-4663.

Safe Zone

Safe Zone is a voluntary network of faculty, staff and students who believe that every member of the university community should have an equal opportunity to grow and learn in a safe and open environment

Health and Safety

The University Health Center provides health care and learning opportunities that help students be well, stay well and do well.

Counseling

The Counseling Center offers a wide range of services designed to support students in their personal and professional endeavors with the goal of promoting well-being in all aspects of life.

Universal Restrooms at JMU

Universal restrooms (also known as Gender Neutral) are defined by JMU as a single occupancy restroom which can be used by people of any sex or gender. Most are accessible and several are fully ADA compliant. Please note that some of these are located in residence halls that may only be accessed by students who live in the building, or are the guest of a resident.

  • Shenandoah Valley Equality -The mission of Shenandoah Valley Equality is to build community for LGBTQ people in the Shenandoah Valley.
  • PFLAG - Blue Ridge - Parents, families, friends and allies uniting with LGBT loved ones to promote support, education and advocacy in the Charlottesville and surrounding central Virginia area.
  • Shenandoah LGBTQ Center - The Shenandoah LGBTQ Center was announced on July 13, 2018 in response to the severe lack of resources available in the Shenandoah Valley and Greater Appalachian region for LGBTQ individuals and their families.

  • Equality Virginia - Statewide, non-partisan lobbying, education and support network for the GLBT communities in Virginia.
  • Virginia Anti-Violence Project – Organization working to address and end violence, with a specific focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities across Virginia.

  • Trevor Project - Provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.
  • It Gets Better Project - Communicates to LGBTQ youth that it gets better with videos and other helpful information.
  • Help Guide.Org - Information on understanding and preventing suicide.

  • Consortium of High Education LGBT Resource Professionals - Works to seek climate improvement on campuses and to advocate for policy change, program development and establishment of LGBT Office/Centers.
  • Campus Pride Index - Assists campuses in learning ways to improve their LGBT campus life and ultimately shape the educational experience to be more welcoming and respectful.
  • Human Rights Campaign- Human Rights Campaign represents a grassroots force of more than 700,000 members and supporters nationwide and are the largest national GLBT civil rights organization.
  • Lambda Legal – National organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people, and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work.
