Photography often tells a story, but for photographer Adam Tabet, the adventure leading up to taking the photo is just as important as the story the photo itself tells. The junior Media Arts and Design major is a member of JMU’s Video Adventure Club, an organization that makes trips to capture the beauty of their adventures. The club has traveled around Virginia and to North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia and Georgia, all places Adam has captured the beauty of fall in.
Welcome to “Whispers of Winter” a collection of photos showcasing the beauty of nature in fall across the Appalachian region.
Adam has always been interested in National Geographic, and when he was in middle school, he got an iPod from his grandmother, which was his first camera. Going into high school, he figured out how to use his parents’ Nikon d3000, which he used until college, before switching to a Sony 6400, which he used for this collection. Adam likes photography because he enjoys being able to capture the things that not everyone can see. He likes being able to capture views that not everyone may be able to easily get to and share them with others.
Growing up in Chesapeake, Virginia, Adam did not get to experience the Autumn months as he did when capturing this collection. Being so close to the water, he was not near many mountains or trees. Now that he has access to those views through his Video Adventure Club membership, he wants to share it with others that may not be able to see those views themselves.
With a minor in entrepreneurship, Adam has provided his photography to those who may not have been able to see the views from his adventures, by selling prints and photographic notecards of his work. Some of his work in this collection is for sale on his personal website as prints. His SMAD concentration being in creative advertising, while it does help him advertise his photography, is used to highlight the importance of nature, encouraging his audience to have a stronger respect for it.
Every photo in this collection was taken while on a Video Adventure club exhibition. Adam is now a part of the leadership for the club, and remarked that they taught him to take risks, helped him learn about himself and photography. Adam’s favorite shot is "Fall Flow" because of the risks he took to get the shot. Adam’s goal from sharing this collection is to get people to “listen” to nature, and respect it in addition to simply admiring its beauty.
