Courses Likely to Transfer to JMU

The Office of the Registrar will complete an evaluation of credit after an offer of admission has been made. Each course taken at another institution will be evaluated individually, and credit will be allowed only for equivalent college courses offered at JMU in which a grade of "C" or better has been earned. A "C-" will not transfer.

You may also want to review courses that will count towards your major as you are progressing through your VCCS or Richard Bland Associate Degree to help in your transition to JMU. To determine whether your courses will transfer, use the Transfer Credit Equivalency guide to see which courses are currently accepted.

If you are receiving an Associate Degree

The Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.)* and Associate of Arts and Sciences (A.A.&S.) degrees from all Virginia community colleges and Richard Bland College have been approved by JMU to fulfill JMU's General Education requirements

* The only Virginia community college A.S. degree that is not approved as a state transfer degree by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and therefore will not waive General Education requirements at JMU is the A.S. in General Studies from Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA). Associate of Fine Arts (A.F.A.) and Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees from Virginia community colleges are also not eligible for the General Education waiver at JMU.

To have your General Education requirements waived, you must apply for graduation at your community college and request that a final copy of your transcript showing the degree conferred be sent to the JMU admissions office.

If you are not receiving an Associate Degree

If you transfer to JMU from a Virginia community college or Richard Bland College without earning an associate's degree, your credits will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis as specified by the JMU transfer credit policies.
