All surfaces, tools, equipment and other objects that come in contact with blood or OPIM must be decontaminated as soon as possible after completion of procedures or following spills. If equipment cannot be cleaned immediately, it should be labeled as contaminated until decontamination can be completed.
Use BIOHAZARD labels to identify any contaminated surfaces or equipment.
Decontamination can be achieved by use of the following methods:
- Use of household bleach 1:10 ratio, (1/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water)
- Commercial disinfectants may be available in your work environment, check the label for virus killing capability
- Autoclave may be available in lab environments on campus
