Current and Recent Projects

  • Transactional Success in the Texting of Individuals with Aphasia: We are interested in developing tools to evaluate texting transactional success (information exchange) in aphasia and examining behaviors that enable and/or detract from successful transaction and interaction (building social connectedness) via text messaging.
  • Improving Electronic Written Communication in Aphasia: The JMU Aphasia Research & Treatment Lab The JMU Aphasia Research & Treatment Lab (Harrisonburg, VA) and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab (Chicago, IL) conducted a research study that will help us understand how to better treat writing and texting skills in persons with aphasia. Details about the study can be found on ClinicalTrials.gov https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03773419?cond=aphasia&rank=4
  • Supported conversation groups and book clubs help participants connect with other people with aphasia and practice communicating in a supportive group environment. We are currently studying facilitation and management strategies used by facilitators of effective groups.
