Admission and Retention Standards
The admission and retention standards are designed to instill a professional attitude and commitment to the profession of teaching. The admission and retention standards complement the JMU Teacher Education application process. The following outlines the admission and retention standards and procedures for PHETE. The following must be obtained or completed by the end of fall semester of junior year:
PHETE Admission Standards
- Full acceptance to the JMU Teacher Education Program: (by October 1st)
Begin the process at: https://www.jmu.edu/coe/esc and follow the designated steps. - Work Experience Verification Form
Documentation of at least 50 hours of current work experience in a position with children or young adults i.e. service learning activity, school or youth group, recreation department, summer youth camp.
Complete the Work Experience Verification Form - Professional Resume
- Personal Statement
Personal Statement: Respond to why you want to be an educator and reflect on the professional dispositions needed in 200 words or less - Successful completion of the following coursework:
BIO 290, EDUC 300*, PSYC 160*, KIN 100*, KIN 224, KIN 303*, & KIN 312*
*Grade of C or better required - Demonstration & appreciation of professional dispositions at an acceptable standard with a minimum score of 14 (refer to PHETE Professional Dispositions)

PHETE Retention Standards
Once admitted to the program there are three gates when teacher candidates’ status are reviewed for retention and continuation in the program. Letters are sent to teacher candidates who merit commendation and to those who require remediation, probation or dismissal. The following are the 3 gates and the criteria assessed:
1. To enroll in KIN 480-Student Teaching in Elementary Physical Education:
- Retention in the JMU Teacher Education Program
- Academic Performance in PHETE classes.
A minimum of C must be maintained in each of the following courses:
KIN 310, 311, 313, and 410 - Current CPR/First Aid/AED certifications
- • Consistent demonstration & appreciation of professional dispositions at an acceptable standard with a minimum score of 14 (refer to PHETE Professional Dispositions)
2. To be admitted to fifth year:
- Maintain a GPA of > 3.0 in last two undergraduate years
- BS degree in Kinesiology with concentration in PHETE from JMU
- Consistent demonstration & appreciation of professional dispositions at an acceptable standard with a minimum score of 14
- Submit and application for admission to the graduate program. Visit the academic overview page for information about how to apply.
3. To enroll in KIN 683-Secondary Internship
- A 3.0 or better Graduate GPA
- Successful completion of Graduate Comprehensive Exam
- Passing scores on PRAXIS Subject Assessment (Health & Physical Education: Content Knowledge 5857) by September 1st of 5th year
Transfer Student Information
Review the JMU Transfer Advising Website and complete your application to JMU. After you are accepted to JMU, the Admissions Office will schedule you for Transfer Orientation. Attend the Transfer Orientation in December for Spring transfers, and June for August transfers. After that time, please meet with our departmental adviser as soon as possible to plan your course of study.
