Research Description

The Chen Lab focuses on solving environmental emerging concerns by developing sustainable bioadsorbents and membrane processes. One direction is focusing on nitrogen and phosphate recovery from animal manure waste and converting them to valorized products; second, our lab employs selective adsorbents to remove per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water/wastewater systems with the integration of Donnan dialysis processes; third, our lab is interested in radioactive waste clean up from water systems via efficient membrane separation and adsorption processes. Our ultimate goal is to close the nitrogen circle and achieve circular nutrient economy, as well as ensure human health by accessing safe drinking water.
