The Spring 2021 JMU Chemistry & Biochemistry Seminar Series is online! Typically, seminar time is an opportunity for the entire department to gather, learn and interact. This semester, we aim to recreate the sense of community we experience at seminars in a variety of formats including:
- Virtual, synchronous seminars. In this format, the speaker(s) will present material live (on Zoom or WebEx), and students and faculty will log in during the presentation to watch and/or participate. These seminars may include interactions during and/or after the presentation, where participants can ask questions, comment, etc.
- Virtual, asynchronous or asynchronous seminars, followed by synchronous group discussion. In this format, participants will be directed to watch a live or recorded presentation. Subsequently, students and faculty will meet (on Zoom or WebEx) to discuss and ask questions about the presentation in small groups and/or as a larger community.
Zoom or WebEx links will be posted on the Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors Canvas site. If you are not a member of that site, please contact carankl@jmu.edu or another JMU Chemistry faculty member in advance of the seminar to request access.
Additional formats may also be explored, depending on circumstances and interests of the presenter(s).
This semster, many of the synchronous events (seminars and/or discussions) will be at 3:30pm on Fridays, though other times may also be scheduled. Some seminars may be recorded for later access, if presenters give us permission to do so.
Seminars are regularly scheduled throughout the semester, and this page will be updated as needed.

Percy Julian: Forgotten Genius (NOVA Documenary) BEFORE SEMINAR: Seminar participants are strongly encouraged to watch the entire NOVA documentary before coming to seminar. The full-length film (1h53m) can be accessed anytime on PBS. DURING SEMINAR: Clips from the movie will be shared and incorporated into the departmental discussion.

Picture a Scientist Before seminar: We encourage all members of the JMU Chemistry & Biochemistry community to watch this powerful film which paints a powerful picture of the struggles that women in science have faced. The film challenges audiences of all genders and backgrounds to question their own implicit biases and move toward change. (Content warning: Some scenes from the movie feature firsthand stories of explicit and brutal harassment, implicit gender and racial bias, and entrenched institutional discrimination.) You can watch Picture a Scientist any time until Wednesday, March 24 (and maybe later) through a JMU database provider. |
