Mission Statement:
The Center evolved from an inter-disciplinary colloquium of faculty members engaged in developing a Third World perspective in the teaching of and research in the basic academic disciplines. Over the years, the Center's activities have broadened into five sections: research; lectures/training; publications; resource collection-reading room; and international exchange. At present, the Center has five full-time researchers (one of whom serves as the librarian), three administrative staff, a director and deputy director who are able to implement the programs with the help of members of the UP faculty, students and visiting fellows. THE CENTER'S OBJECTIVES: - Coordinate and undertake research activities in the areas of political economy, popular movements, politics and culture - Disseminate research findings through books, journals, and occasional papers - Conduct specialized training, seminars, symposia and lecture series - Maintain a library and information file of publications that are relevant to Third World studies - Facilitate exchanges and networking among social science scholars locally and internationally - Perform other activities that promote academic excellence in the university
