Dr. Coleman received his doctorate in public health with a focus on social and behavioral health science from the University of Connecticut, his master’s in public health with a focus on public health policy and management from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman School of Public Health at the University of Arizona and his bachelor’s degrees in political science and Spanish from Georgia State University. Prior to joining the faculty at James Madison University, Dr. Coleman completed a two-year federal program evaluation fellowship through the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education at the US Army Public Health Center. In 2022, Dr. Coleman received his third national fellowship, by becoming an Obesity Health Disparities PRIDE Fellow with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute through the National Institutes of Health. He has over a decade worth of experience in school-based health programming. While at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Coleman worked on the USAID Husky Bytes Grant which aimed to reduce sugar-sweetened beverage consumption through a preschool-based intervention. As a result of his efforts, Dr. Coleman received the Provost Award for Excellence in Community Engagement. Following his work in Connecticut, Dr. Coleman served as a program evaluator for a school-based suicide prevention intervention in El Salvador through the US Peace Corps Response. Currently, Dr. Coleman serves as a board member for the National Council on Black Health.
