The MSME Department has several graduate programs. Please read the instructions carefully to ensure you apply to the correct program and that your application is complete.

I'm applying to a Middle School program...
I'm interested in the graduate-only pathway...

Unconditional Admission Requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or above,
  • Undergraduate degree (may need additional coursework to meet VDOE content area competencies),
  • Grade of “C” or higher in a “foundations of education and the teaching profession” course. JMU’s EDUC 200 Foundations of American Education satisfies this requirement,
  • Grade of “C” or higher in a “human development and learning (birth through adolescence)” course. JMU’s PSYC 160 Life Span Human Development or EDUC 175E Learning, Behavior and Engagement in Context satisfies this requirement,
  • Passing score on the ALEKS or Praxis Core Math Assessment or satisfactory SAT/ACT math section score,
  • Resume,
  • Virginia passing score on the appropriate Praxis Subject Assessment for your endorsement,
  • Interview with Program Coordinator (will be scheduled after submission of application).

  • Log in/create a CollegeNet account,
  • Complete Personal Information section, select next;
  • Select Your Program page:
    • select "Education"
    • select "Middle School Education, Grades 6-8 Concentration"
  • Complete the remaining sections of the application, uploading documents (Praxis scores, resume, unofficial transcripts, etc.) as required,
  • Submit the completed application.
I'm applying to a Secondary Education program...
I'm in the combined undergraduate and graduate program...

Unconditional Admission Requirements:

  • Completion of the JMU Pre-Professional Secondary Education minor,
  • Completion of an undergraduate major in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, History (with Social Studies minor), Mathematics, Physics, or Political Science (with Social Studies minor),
  • Full admission to the Teacher Education Program,
  • Passing scores on your Praxis Subject Assessment,
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher.

How to Apply:

  • On the Graduate School's Program Page, select "Apply Now",
  • Log in/create a CollegeNet account,
  • Complete Personal Information section, select next;
  • Select Your Program page:
    • select "Education"
    • select "Secondary Education, Grades 6-12 Concentration" and select your starting term and move on to the Supplemental Questions section.
      • answer question: "Are you currently enrolled as a current JMU undergraduate student with plans to complete a bachelor's in a teacher licensure program with a minor in Pre-professional Secondary Education?" Answer YES.
  • Complete the remaining sections of the application,
  • Submit the completed application.

      • answer question: "Have you completed a bachelor's degree from any university and would like to prepare for teacher licensure? Answer YES.
  • Complete the remaining sections of the application, uploading documents (Praxis scores, resume, unofficial transcripts, etc.) as required,
  • Submit the completed application.
