Our Biology faculty and students volunteer their time for a variety of programs designed to promote scientific literacy, spark excitement about scientific exploration, instill an appreciation for biodiversity, and promote conservation awareness.

• Hosting the Shenandoah Valley Regional Brain Bee, an international program in which high school students compete in a competition of neuroscience with a chance to represent our region in the National Bee.
• Developing and teaching hands-on lessons to children across the region at school STEM days, family STEM nights, after-school progams, dual enrollment courses, distance learning, and science festivals.
• Mentoring imprisoned youth on research projects that give them experiences in scientific investigation while learning relevant concepts in ecology and physiology.
• Developing and teaching hands-on life science lessons to students and other community members visiting campus including JMU's madiSTEM conference designed for girls and STEM Center-hosted school field trips.
• Sharing expertise through public lectures, place-based educational tours, and other activities with communities of interested citizens. 
• Supporting STEM enrichment programs by mentoring high school students carrying out research in faculty labs and judging regional, state, and national STEM competitions.
