A network of private investors that help fund entrepreneurial enterprises located in our communities. SVAI’s primary interest is Start-Up/ Early Stage business ventures with funding needs in the range of $50,000 to $300,000 that leverage technology to create a new product or service. A review committee assesses and ranks business proposals based on several factors, including: market potential, scalability, new job creation, intellectual property, competition, management team, business acumen, capital intensity and potential return on an equity investment.

The Mission of the Shenandoah Valley SBDC is to advise, train, and inform small businesses to help them achieve success. They serve aspiring entrepreneur as well as experienced owners. The Shenandoah Valley SBDC is one of 29 centers across Virginia providing professional business advice, training, and information resources to help grow and strengthen local businesses. The SBDC is co-located with TI&ED on the second floor of the ICE House.

The Virginia Growth and Opportunity Board and Fund is a business-led, bipartisan initiative that is incentivized and encouraged by the state. GO VA was initiated by Virginia’s senior business leaders to foster private-sector growth and job creation through state incentives for regional collaboration by business, education, and government. CIT's Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund (CRCF) accelerates innovation and economic growth in Virginia by advancing solutions to important state, national, and international problems through technology research, development, and commercialization.
Virginia Innovation Alliance (VIA) promotes the common interest of improving university technology commercialization in Virginia. We serve as the main points of contact at the seven largest public universities and one medical institution in Virginia for research commercialization and licensing to existing and startup companies. Virginia Innovation Alliance provides linkage between the various university technology commercialization offices in Virginia to share best practices as we work to support our regional innovation ecosystems across the Commonwealth.
There are two small business focused government programs that are available to assist in transitioning technology out of the lab: Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. The SBIR program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. The STTR program is another program that expands funding opportunities in the federal innovation research and development (R&D) arena.
The NSF I-Corps program can also help you extend your focus beyond the laboratory and onto the development of your potential company.
UBED’s mission is to enhance the Commonwealth’s economic prosperity by providing linkage among Virginia’s autonomous universities. Over 60 participants from higher ed institutions including the community college system office, CIT, VEDP, and SCHEV bring together the unique strengths of Virginia’s public institutions to work in partnership with economic development stakeholders at all levels.
