The JMU Center for Genome and Metagenome Studies (CGEMS) supports innovative, leading-edge research and training in the methods and principles of genomics, metagenomics, transcriptomics, and bioinformatics for students at all levels. CGEMS supports and fosters collaboration among researchers and students in a variety of departments and colleges. CGEMS also sponsors seminars, and provides outreach to other higher education institutions in Virginia as well as area schools.



Mission

The mission of CGEMS is to support innovative research and training in the methods and principles of genomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics in order to provide an exemplary learning experience for undergraduate and graduate students.



Objectives

Our objectives are to:

  1. Support the Next-Generation Sequencing and genome analysis needs of student and faculty research and courses
  2. Work with faculty to integrate innovative new genomic and metagenomic laboratories and hands-on modules into existing STEM courses as well as to develop new courses
  3. Support additional activities such as inter-university collaboration, seminar speakers, outreach to local schools and colleges, etc.
