The Science and Math Learning Center hires undergraduate students to tutor typically 5-10 hours per week. All in-person tutoring takes place within the SMLC on the first floor of the Student Success Center.
Students can apply to become a tutor in one (or more) of four disciplines:
- Chemistry
- Math
- Physics
- Statistics
Tutors must meet the following qualifications:
- Overall 2.75 CUM GPA or better
- Achieved no lower than a B in courses they are intending to tutor
- Submit 2 recommendations (at least one from a professor in the discipline they are intending to tutor)
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge in discipline within personal interview
Tutors must have completed the following courses (or equivalent) in the respective discipline:
- Math: MATH 236 (Calculus II)
- completion of Math 237 (Calculus III) is preferred, but not mandatory
- General Chemistry: CHEM 131 and CHEM 132
- Organic Chemistry: CHEM 241 and CHEM 242
- Physics: PHYS 240 and PHYS 250
- Statistics: MATH 220 (or equivalent)
- completion of additional statistics course is preferred, but not mandatory

- Please also complete two (2) letter of recommendation forms. Note: At least one recommendation should be from an instructor in the discipline you are intending to tutor!
- Please also submit the most recent copy of your unofficial transcript to the appropriate coordinator(s). This can be downloaded from MyMadison.
- The appropriate coordinator(s) will review your application and contact you directly for next steps!

- Is tutoring experience required?
- While tutoring experience (formal and/or informal) is helpful, it is not required to be considered for a tutoring position!
- Is there training for the position?
- Yes! All tutors participate in our internationally certified tutor training program. You also get paid for training. The Science and Math Learning Center is a Level 1 certified program through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification, and upon completion of our training program, you will be a Level 1 Certified Tutor!
- Part of our training program is also content-focused to keep you reviewing material in your discipline that students might ask you about!
