With research interests including the kinesthetic connections in conducting pedagogy, the integration of Kodály methodology in complex choral audiation and performance, and the sociological impact of choral cultures on learning and flow states, Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Jo-Anne van der Vat-Chromy brings a diverse career in international performance and teaching to JMU. The 2025 College of Visual and Performing Arts Distinguished Teacher Award winner, Dr. van der Vat-Chromy's innovative teaching practices and dedication to mentorship have transformed the student experience at JMU. Her ability to blend pedagogical rigor with compassion and creativity has empowered students and choirs both in the classroom and on national stages including the upcoming CVPA Dance, Percussion, and Choral performance at Carnegie Hall.
As JMU Director of Choral Activities, Dr. van der Vat-Chromy directs The Madison Singers, the JMU Chorale, the UCSA: University Chorus Soprano/Alto Ensemble, and coordinates the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) Generations Choir, an intergenerational choral practicum in Harrisonburg, VA. An active guest conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and certified Kodály music educator, Dr. V. is a proud faculty member of Kodály Institutes at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, and James Madison University. The 2012-2014 Interim Music Director for the Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir, currently Dr. V. is the Director of the JMU Vocal Arts Summer Camp and serves as JMU Co-Coordinator of the Ensemble Area.
Affectionately dubbed 'our collective fairy-godmother' by the renowned choral ensemble, The King's Singers, Dr. van der Vat-Chromy is the recipient of the 2022 College of Visual and Performing Arts Outstanding Student Mentor Award, the 2016 JMU Woman of Distinction Award, and the 2021-2022 Shirley Hanson Roberts '56 and Richard D. Robers Endowment for Faculty Excellence, a university-wide endowed award for excellence in student engagement, collaborative learning, growth, and self-discovery.
