Dedicated JMU student advisors saluted as Game Changers

A pair of JMU academic advisors were honored as “Game Changers” for their years of dedicated service to students during Saturday’s football game against Georgia State.
Paul Henriksen, an advisor and lecturer in the College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE), and Brenda Wilkinson, an advisor in the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), were joined in an on-field ceremony during the third quarter by Jeffrey Tang, interim dean of CISE, Steven Whitmeyer, associate dean of CSM, Ravi Shankar, head of the department of mathematics and statistics, Bob Kolvoord, interim provost, and Matt Roan, athletic director.
Henriksen has served in his role for more than 20 years. Beloved by both students and student-athletes, Henriksen is known for his willingness to help integrated science and technology students navigate their academic schedules. His commitment to student success has made him a cherished figure within the college.
Wilkinson was celebrated for her meticulous approach to advising for nearly 30 years. She delves into students’ majors, past schedules, placement scores and other relevant information to ensure they have the best possible academic plan. Wilkinson has also built strong relationships with student-athlete advisors and is a dedicated supporter of JMU football, holding season tickets for decades.
JMU Athletics is recognizing Game Changer honorees from each of the university’s eight colleges at home football games throughout the season.
Previous honorees were:
- Doreen Liccione (’92), an academic adviser in the College of Business, who was the first JMU employee recognized as a “Game Changer” during the Sept. 7 football game.
- Professors Monica Smith-Woofter, College of Education, and Jamie Frye, College of Health and Behavioral Studies, who were recognized at the Sept. 28 game.
- John Hodges, the technology director and an instructor for the School of Media Arts and Design, received the honor at the Oct. 10 game.
- Music professor Eric Guinivan, who was recognized at the Oct. 26 game.
The final Game Changer award will be presented to a recipient from the Honors College at the Nov. 30 game.
