Each Spring (usually in March or April), the Department of Philosophy and Religion hosts an Honors Banquet. This event begins with the induction of new members into the Department's national honor society chapters: Phi Sigma Tau (philosophy honor society), and Theta Alpha Kappa (religion honor society). The winners of the Outstanding Senior in Philosophy and Outstanding Senior in Religion awards are announced, and the winner of the Philosophy Essay Contest is also announced. In addition, a member of the faculty presents a scholarly paper to the assembled. After these events, participants proceed to a catered dinner with JMU faculty. The Honors Banquet is the Department's primary event devoted to honoring student excellence in philosophy and religion.
