Summer 2025 Pre-Law Unpaid Internship Scholarship

Apply for up to $4,000 to cover expenses associated with an unpaid law-related internship in Summer 2025. Submit a complete application by Monday, April 14, 2025.

Eligibility: 

  • JMU pre-law and Legal Studies degree-seeking students planning to participate in a law-related summer internship for academic credit
  • Interest in exploring law school and a legal career
  • Preference for students with documented financial need
  • You must be enrolled in at least one credit hour of internship credit, as funds are distributed via Financial Aid

Who is not eligible:

  • Programs that require you to pay a fee to obtain an internship or for training, housing, etc. will not be considered.
  • Students interning at companies/organizations that do not follow JMU’s non-discrimination EEO policy are not eligible

Requirements:

  • Submit the application survey. The survey includes two short answer questions: one that discusses how your proposed internship supports your academic and professional goals and one that describes the internship that you have secured for summer 2025. The survey also asks for contact information for two references. At least one should be a JMU professor.
  • Secure a for-credit law-related internship that is unpaid (but you may receive some money for meals, transportation, or other expenses) and completed in the summer months
  • Submit Employer Verification Form
  • Submit Internship Budget Form

Review process:

A selection committee comprised of JMU faculty and staff will evaluate applications based on the quality and thoughtfulness of the responses, the link between the proposed internship and the applicant’s academic/professional goals, academic performance, and financial need. The committee will review all complete applications submitted by the April 14 deadline.
 
Additional details: 

Scholarship amounts vary based on the budget you propose. The maximum award amount is $4,000. Scholarship funds can be used to pay for your summer internship course credits but may not be used for any other classes you may take in the summer. The money is distributed by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Funds will be applied toward any outstanding bill, including your tuition first.
