Dr. Barbara Schaal discussed the need for government support for the sciences, and will follow her speech with a Q&A. Barbara Schaal is the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis and vice president of the National Academy of Sciences. Her research interests include evolutionary genetics of plants, molecular evolution of genetics, systematics, and quantitative genetics. She is the first woman to be elected vice president of the Academy of Sciences, and has also served as the President of the Botanical Society of America, the Society for the Study of Evolution, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
