Debbie Perrone is JMU’s first Director of Strategic Research Support, a position created in 2020 to promote the growth of sponsored research activities and faculty career development. She is working initially with Vice Provost Anthony Tongen and academic leaders to create a strategic research agenda to guide that growth. Her responsibilities include building and supporting collaborative, potentially interdisciplinary, teams to pursue externally sponsored funding, and helping faculty and staff develop compelling grant proposals. She also serves on the board of James Madison Innovations.

Debbie came to JMU in 2016 to serve as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations in the Advancement office, where she worked with faculty members from every college in their pursuit of private funding for projects and programs. During her long tenure at Johns Hopkins University before moving to Harrisonburg, she helped secure funding for research, academic programs, and community outreach across a broad range of disciplines. In earlier years, she led a not-for-profit public health organization in New Jersey and managed her own fund-raising consultancy. Debbie holds two Master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University, one in Liberal Arts and one in Writing. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Economic and Social Studies from the University of Manchester (U.K.), and pursued a doctorate in Applied Anthropology at Boston University.
