Vanhove teaches courses in research methods and statistics, organizational theory, organizational behavior, organizational change and strategic human resource management, and leadership theory in the Strategic Leadership Studies Ph.D. program at JMU’s College of Business. 

Vanhove’s research focuses on employee resilience and health; employment discrimination, specifically due to employee gender, race, and weight; and followership and leader-follower relations. 

Vanhove earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Minnesota Duluth, a master's degree in industrial-organizational psychology at Colorado State University and a doctorate in industrial-organizational psychology at Colorado State University.
