There are a number of shorthands and acronyms that you’ll come across at JMU and, while this list only scratches the surface, it will at least help to translate and clarify just what we’re talking about.
Shorthands

Open House |
In the fall, the University hosts general “open house” sessions for prospective students and their parents to learn more about JMU (as they consider where they would like to apply to college). Many times, AUHs present at these sessions. |
CHOICES |
These are a series of admitted student Open Houses (usually taking place in February and April), where students and parents can spend the day getting more information about JMU to make a “choice” about attending. Many times, AUHs present at these sessions. |
Summer Springboard |
A program during June and July where admitted students come to campus to meet other members of the incoming class, get advice from their Orientation Peer Advisor (OPA), learn about the expectations of being a member of the campus community, and finalize their fall course schedule. |
1787 |
Shorthand for August Orientation; termed so because it was August of 1787 when James Madison and his compatriots met in Philadelphia to write the United States Constitution – thus catalyzing great change and transition. The August Orientation is meant to inspire a similar spirit of transition. |
It’s Complicated |
A program for incoming first year students designed by Ethical Reasoning in Action. It is designed to challenge students to apply ethical reasoning to a specific case study and to develop knowledge and critical thinking skills. Students are introduced to the program during Summer Springboard, and then prepare for the discussion at 1787. Faculty and staff facilitate these discussions, and you can volunteer to be a facilitator. |
Chrome River |
An electronic travel management system implemented in July 2017 that replaces paper Travel Expense Reimbursement Voucher (TERV) and the paper Travel Authorization form (TA). |
