  • The JMU chapter of the Financial Management Association was awarded the FMA Superior Chapter Award for the 2023 – 2024 academic year.
  • Assistant Professor, Xu Niu, earned second place for the 2024 Basic or Discovery Publication Award. 
  • Jaideep Chowdhury, professor, and Weiwei Zhang, associate professor, earned third place for the 2024 Basic or Discovery Publication Award. 
  • Associate Professor Carl Larsson was awarded the 2024 Dr. Otto C. Brenner Memorial Award for outstanding teaching.
  • The CFA student team won the 2023 state CFA Investment Research Challenge for a second year in a row.
  • The finance program is a CFA University Affiliate
  • International Finance is often offered in Antwerp, Belgium during the summer.
  • In the inaugural CFA Society Virginia Stock Pitch Competition, JMU placed second for their analysis and presentation on Honeywell International, Inc. (NASDAQ: HON).
  • The Banking Team competed and advanced to the final round of the FDIC Academic Challenge – a nationwide competition that brings real-world policy questions involving the banking industry to the classroom.
  • The JMU Financial Management Association chapter has earned the FMA Superior Chapter Award over five times and most recently for the 2023 – 2024 academic year.
  • In Spring 2024, two senior finance majors passed the CFA Institute Level I Exam.
  • The JMU Quantitative Finance major is the only one offered in the state of Virginia and is classified as a STEM program.
  • The Gaglioti Capital Markets Lab features computers at every seat, with access to important industry software applications such as SAS, Analytic Solver and Crystal Ball. Bloomberg terminals keep students and faculty connected to relevant and up-to-the-minute data for the finance world.
  • Carl Larsson, associate professor, earned second place for 2023's Teaching and Learning Publication Award. 
  • Professors Jason and Kristin Fink won first place for 2023's Applied or Integration/Application Publication Award. 
  • Weiwei Zhang and Jaideep Chowdhury of the Department of Finance and Business Law, recently had a paper, “Director optimism and CEO equity compensation,” accepted for publication in the Journal of Empirical Finance.
