Application Deadline
The application will open August 1. February 1 is the deadline to be guaranteed consideration for admissions. Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. Completed applications should be received at least 6 weeks prior to the start of the semester in which the applicant intends to enroll.

Transcripts
Unofficial transcripts from all post-secondary institutions should be uploaded with your electronic application and may be used for departmental admission review purposes. If offered admission, you will be directed and required to submit to the JMU Graduate School an official transcript from any institution from which a degree has been awarded to finalize your admission. Transcripts are considered official if they are sent to JMU directly from the issuing institution.
Required by Program
- An artist statement of 300-500 words explaining your principle ideas and motivation engaged in the artwork submitted
- Statement of Intent of 300-500 words explaining why you wish to study studio art at the graduate level
- Three letters of recommendation
- 15-20 examples of current artwork - Title, media/materials, size, date
- In addition to the general admission requirements, the prospective graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts program must have an undergraduate degree with a minimum of 33 credit hours in studio art and 9 credit hours in art history. The art history hours must include 6 hours surveying the history of art and 3 hours in upper-level art history, or equivalent.
