Before your first training

Dr. Kubow will assign specific sections or items based on the type(s) of microscopy that you want to do. Complete only the sections that have been assigned to you. Ask Dr. Kubow if you are unsure.

  1. Everyone: The Basics (do this first!)
    1. Read: Resolution Overview
    2. Read: Digital Imaging Overview
  2. Brightfield ("normal") microscopy
    1. Read: Brightfield Microscopy Overview
  3. Phase Contrast Microscopy
    1. Complete Tutorial #2 (Brightfield Microscopy) first.
    2. Read: Phase Contrast Microscopy Overview
  4. DIC microscopy
    1. Complete Tutorial #2 (Brightfield Microscopy) first.
    2. Read: DIC Microscopy Overview
  5. Fluorescence microscopy
    1. Read: Fluorescence Microscopy Overview
    2. Watch: *Choosing a Filter Set
    3. If you will be using more than one fluorescent probe, watch: *Imaging Multiple Fluorophores (up to 8:40)
  6. Confocal microscopy
    1. Complete Tutorial #5 (fluorescence microscopy) first.
    2. Read: Confocal Microscopy Overview
    3. Watch: *The Confocal Principle

Before your second training

  1. Everyone: Data Management
    1. Read: Microscopy Data Management for Students
    2. Complete: the Data Management section of the worksheet you were given at your first training.
    3. (If you are learning fluorescence microscopy, also complete the first part of the Fluorescence section on the worksheet.)
  2. If assigned: Advanced Techniques
    1. If you will be using Lightning mode for enhanced resolution, read the Lightning Overview
    2. If you will be performing Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (FLIM), read the FLIM Overview

Before your final meeting ("driver's test")

  1. Read: Microscopy Facility User Policy
  2. Complete: User Registration Form (print, sign, and bring to your first training)
