Dr. Wendy Lushbaugh has been serving at James Madison University since 2001, starting out in the Office of Residential Life before transitioning to the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices in 2006. For almost 15 years she has been the director for this office, leading it and its staff through the ever changing environment of student conduct with grace and compassion. To her, student conduct is more than just discipline - it involves personal learning, growth, and helping students to become their best self here at James Madison University. This perspective of her job is not only a reflection of her professional self, but of her personal spirit. Her intrinsic motivation for a better community, calming presence, and commitment to lifelong learning is an inspiration to all who meet her.
Wendy is constantly thinking about how to build a better JMU community - starting with the transition of the department from Judicial Affairs to Restorative Practices. Wendy was dedicated to this large transition, providing unwavering support and encouragement for all who were a part of it. To quote her nomination letter, “Wendy never lets difficult circumstances impede her ability to connect with students and staff. She sets the tone of the office, which has been one of stability and pursuing excellence in all we do.”. What is best and safest for the students is continually at the forefront of Wendy’s mind when it comes to making decisions. The way she interacts with parents and students involved in Restorative Practices is one of empathy and serenity. She continues to cultivate relationships with these individuals, the Harrisonburg Police Department, and other campus and community partners with this calming and empathetic spirit. In addition to leading this office, coordinating with multiple individuals, and making difficult decisions, Wendy has still found time to pursue her doctoral degree in continuing her education in strategic leadership. This commitment to personal knowledge and growth showcases her priority for giving the students and staff her “best”. It is abundantly clear that Wendy has dedicated her entire professional career to guiding and advocating for others - embodying the “All Together One” spirit that James Madison University is founded upon. We hope that this award can be a small thank you to the countless times you have gone the extra mile for this campus and its community.
