Grants

The Xi Chapter of Virginia offers minigrants in support of faculty and student research and scholarship. Money for these grants can be used for the following:

  • Student travel to present scholarly work at meetings
  • Student travel to support scholarly activities
  • Supplies for scholarly activities
  • Collaborative research between PBK faculty members and their students

Grants of up to $1000 will be awarded for travel, and up $500 for supplies. Grant money cannot be used retroactively to pay for purchases made in the past.

Eligibility

All Xi Chapter of Virginia student members are eligible, provided they are in residence at James Madison University during the period when the funds will be used. Faculty members who have been initiated as Phi Beta Kappa members at any institution may apply for PBK minigrants to support mentored research with one or more JMU students (the mentored students do not need to be PBK members).

Application Procedure

Minigrant applications are considered upon receipt between August and April and should be made at least six weeks before funds are needed. Only complete applications will be considered.

Please send the following application materials electronically to pbksecretary@jmu.edu:

  1. Statement of Purpose (maximum two pages)—Include a brief description of the work, what the money will be used for, and note any other sources of funding.
  2. Proposed Budget—List all items for which grant money will be spent and the total requested.
  3. Letter of Support—If the applicant is a student, the application must include a letter from the faculty member mentoring the student work. The letter can be sent directly to pbksecretary@jmu.edu.
